In my own words
How I ended up with a method.
I am Rabbi Dr. Noam Weinberg. For three decades I have sat with people through the defining moments of their lives, as a rabbi, an educator, a school leader and a mentor. I am a child and grandchild of Holocaust survivors.
Most of that happened at the point where people had run out of their own ideas. I watched marriages come apart and I watched families stop speaking.
Everyone called what I was seeing communication problems. They were not. Most relationship problems are not caused by a lack of love. They are caused by what people do when love feels threatened: they pursue, withdraw, defend, over-explain, or try to get the other person to change so that they can finally feel all right.
Once I stopped treating the argument as the problem, cases that had been stuck for years started moving in weeks. My job stopped being to work out who was right. It became helping someone notice what was happening inside them, settle themselves without making everyone else responsible for it, and then choose how they wanted to show up.
The method I built out of that has brought couples to their engagement, pulled marriages back from the edge, and put families back in the same room.
For thirty years it stayed inside my practice. This is the first time I am teaching it to anyone else.
